Description
McMurdo Smartfind A5 "406" Epirb
McMurdo has introduced a new model in the SMARTFIND EPIRB range for the Australian and New Zealand markets. Called the SMARTFIND A5 this EPIRB has been manufactured in response to legislation introduced by the Australian and NZ governments stating that manually-activated EPIRBs are acceptable for use in these two countries.
7 Year Replaceable Battery
406Mhz Epirb
Transmits on 406 and 121 Mhz
Meets AS /NZ 4280.1:2003 Standards
Powerful Strobe Light
Until now, all EPIRBS have been manufactured in accordance with international maritime law to be able to be automatically saltwater-activated.
Additionally, Australia has ruled that it is compulsory for all vessels venturing more than two miles off shore to carry at least this minimum specification EPIRB.
This reduced specification puts the SMARTFIND EPIRB at an entry level price which makes it more accessible to the owners of a wide range of vessels - from kayaks to superyachts.
The introduction of the SMARTFIND A5 will also respond to the huge demand in for emergency distress beacons that transmit on 406MHz. Emergency beacon ownership is widespread in the region and the worldwide satellite system has recently switched off the less reliable 121.5MHZ frequency, meaning that many older beacons are currently being replaced by 406 beacons like the SMARTFIND A5.
Carrying a manual A5 EPIRB is also beneficial to small craft such as canoes and dinghies, since McMurdo EPIRBs are compact compared to others on the market.
Despite reducing the activation feature to manual-only, the SMARTFIND A5 is of rugged construction and boasts a super-long battery life of seven years.
Like all 406 beacons the SMARTFIND operates on the global COSPAS SARSAT 406MHz search and rescue satellite communication system, which is supported by international government search and rescue authorities around the world, so a call for help will be acted upon and fast. SMARTFIND is subscription free.
